EeePC 901 hard disk upgrade Drucken
(Es ist noch keine deutsche Übersetzung dieser Seite verfügbar)

Yes, it works. The EeePC 901 can be upgraded with a hard disk. Even the model without a ZIF connector soldered on the mainboard. The upgrade process is risky for persons who are not experienced with SMD soldering. And the ZIF connectors, cables and compatible hard disks are not very easy to obtain.
I have upgraded my 901 with an 80GB hard disk. Power consumption is not more than it was before the upgrade (i.e. with the two SSD drives). My impression is that power consumption is even lower than before.
The 80GB offer a lot of space for e.g. multimedia content and program suites. Also for gamers, photographers, developers etc. this upgrade could be very interesting. The overall system speed has increased.
Disadvantages: The EeePC is now a bit louder than before (due to the typical hard disk noises and a bit more of fan noise, because the hard disk gets hotter than the SSD drives). Also, the bottom of the EeePC becomes warmer than before. The higher risk of data corruption by mechanical stress is certainly also a disadvantage, but the EeePC should be handled carefully anyway. So this is no reason for me to miss the larger storage space.

The only real problem with this upgrade is that only the very first devices of the EeePC 901 series had a hard disk connector on the motherboard, at least in Germany. The connector is not so easy to obtain, and soldering the connector onto the motherboard is risky.

I still have a few SMD ZIF connectors and the flex cables which are required for connecting the hard disk to the ZIF socket here. If you need this material, let me know. I will make an offer. I don't offer upgrade service anymore.

If you are looking for a hard disk which fits the EeePC901, look for one with the following criteria:
  • 1.8 inch hard disk
  • PATA (IDE) interface, not SATA!
  • ZIF or LIF connector, not the more common standard 1.8" IDE connector
  • 5mm maximum height (one platter only). The higher hard disks (8mm, two stacked platters inside) will not fit without heavy case modification
E.g. these hard disks should fit (no guarantee!):
  • Toshiba MK3008GAL - 30GB - LIF - 4200RPM
  • Toshiba MK4009GAL - 40GB - LIF - 4200RPM
  • Toshiba MK8031GAL and MK8025GAL (both 80GB)
  • Samsung HS082HB (80GB)
  • Samsung HS060HB (60GB)
