My name is Daniel Hertrich. I am an electrical engineer living in Germany.
hermocom, Hertrich Mobile Computing, is my "spare time business". My full-time employer is a consulting company.
My goal is to provide my customers with mobile computing solutions which really fit their needs. For that purpose, I use UMPCs, PDAs, Netbooks or even Smartphones or Tablet PCs, as well as older devices occasionally, such as the HP 200LX Palmtop.
Minimizing the limitations given by the small size of these devices and that way maximizing the productivity, is the most interesting and challenging part of that task.

Clamshell computers
My main interest are ultra-mobile clamshell computers (also called "Palmtops" a while ago), because for a lot of uses they provide the highest level of productivity. Similar to laptops, but much smaller, being equipped with a keyboard and a flip-open screen, they are pocketable and well protected against dirt and damage when closed.
In times when tablet devices flood the market, clamshells are not that easy to find, but they are there, and I can find the one which suits your needs.
Current projects
 HP 200LX Palmtop (MS-DOS 5.0)
SHARP Zaurus Linux PDA with weeXpc Linux
Viliv N5 UMPC with Windows 7
The NoteCase Pro Outliner and hermocom's Plugins
C-Diary diabetes diary for Symbian Smartphones (SiDiary compatible)
DIASYM diabetes diary for Symbian Smartphones (DIABASS compatible)
The Viliv N5 UMPC, a very powerful but pocketable Windows UMPC. This is my current favorite.
NoteCase Pro: I am working on a comprehensive producitivy script package for this outliner, including a complete "Getting Things Done" setup. Also, I support the author with a lot of feature ideas and testing.
UMPC support: If you need advice or help in obtaining and configuring an ultra-mobile PC, I can help you quickly and individually. Just contact me.
OpenPandora, a completely new PC-like PDA platform with impressive specifications, not developed, but supported by me. This is kind of the successor for the SHARP Zaurus PDA with my weeXpc system.
weeXpc, a stable Linux-based software system with PC-like features for SHARP Zaurus PDAs
C-Diary and DIASYM, two variants of a diabetes diary application for Symbian Smartphones (e.g. by Nokia, Sony Ericsson or Samsung) with data transfer to SiDiary by SINOVO (C-Diary) and to mediaspects DIABASS (DIASYM).
Symbian Smartphone software development: If you have a need for a special Smartphone-based application, let's discuss the possibilities.
and of course - as ever - ongoing support for the HP 200LX Palmtop and the other devices from the HP LX Palmtop series.

Productivity Everywhere |
|
...that is hermocom's slogan.
What it is intended to say is that hermocom's main interest is the productivity-oriented usage and optimization of (ultra)mobile, meaning pocketable, computing devices.
For that purpose I am constantly observing the market of Palmtops, PDAs, UMPCs and pocketable netbooks, picking the most promising devices, testing them, sometimes even by using them for my own daily work for a while, and if I think they are well suitable for daily work, I support them. Also, I participate in some relevant online communities, mainly to be mentioned the HPLX Mailing List, which consists of very knowledgable, experienced and ambitious people. I am a member of that great community for over 13 years now, and I learned a lot from these people.
hermocom is one of the last few supporters worldwide for the MS-DOS based Hewlett Packard Palmtop 200LX and its relatives (in short often called "HPLX"). I offer repair and upgrade services, as well as spare parts for the Palmtop models HP 100LX, HP 200LX, HP 1000CX and partially HP 95LX and HP Omnigo 700LX. I also sell such Palmtops, even with customized configuration.
The HP 200LX, developed in 1993, is a real marvel in mobile productivity. Some people and some companies still use it for their daily computing work. It was hard to find dignified successors. The SHARP Zaurus PDAs were candidates for that role, but the software needed a lot of optimization. Hence I offered weeXpc, an innovative, very stable Linux distribution for the SHARP Zaurus PDAs which contains lots of office tools.
Now that SHARP does not manufacture the Zaurus PDAs anymore, and Linux PDAs tend to get bigger and thus are unpocketable (e.g. the SHARP Netwalker), I found an interesting Zaurus successor in the OpenPandora project.
Also, UMPCs (ultra-mobile PCs) get more and more into my focus, as they slowly are getting really useful for daily work. Devices such as the UMID M1, UMID BZ and the Viliv N5 are my favorite candidates for ultra-mobile productivity.
A slightly different field of activity is Symbian Smartphones: I develop software for this platform. Officially released are two diabetes diary applications. Some not (yet) released projects are e.g. an audiobook MP3 player and a very efficient note taking application.
